Two small terracotta plates with an off-white glaze, from Hay's Barro collection. Barro means 'red clay' in Portuguese, and that material remains visible at the rounded, slightly thicker rim.
The plates are made in Portugal, where terracotta has been used for tableware for centuries. Hay chose a rolled rim, a soft finish and balanced proportions, so the plates feel solid and sit steadily on the table. The design is understated and lets the material speak.
This small size is handy as a breakfast plate, side plate, dessert plate or for tapas. The off-white combines with the other Barro colours, but also with white porcelain you already own. The plates are dishwasher safe and ovenproof, so you can also warm something up on them.
